The Windows Media Player application even transcodes MPEG-4, AVI, and MOV formats, making it far more versatile than most video-compatible players. Meanwhile, the MES60VK's 60 GB hard drive is capable of holding a ton of digital media, including about 15,000 songs (more than 1,000 complete albums) at 128 kbps, a mind-boggling 30,000 songs at 64 kbps, and a still-impressive 1,700 songs, or 114 hours, of CD-resolution WAV files. Great player, for tech geeks who are comfortable with a screwdriver December 21, 2008 roebeet (Morrisville, PA) I purchased this player off eBay a few days back (as it's no longer sold - Toshiba basically replaced it with the Zune). I will not review the original firmware, as I wiped it immediately and replaced it with Rockbox (www.rockbox.org). The Rockbox firmware is not complete yet, but it is functional. I have used Rockbox with the Gigabeat F series, but this S series is a major improvement. The S series is small (smaller than an iPod Video), light, and has a nice screen and excellent controls. As for hardware mods, it's very easy to open (5 screws). The hard drive is a standard 1.8 inch ZIF based 8mm size, and I added a 120GB drive to expand the storage. Removing he battery requires removing 2 more screws, but it can be done. Being 700mah, I suspect upgrading to a 1000mah will give me an improvement in battery life, but I haven't done that yet. As for the sound - it's excellent. Just as good as the F series, and on par with other audiophile-recommended DAP's. This easily replaced my F series player. So, if you are a tech geek who uses Rockbox and wants an excellent player that supports it, look no further!
Pretty good... October 31, 2008 D. Murtha Very pleased with the 60GB Gigabeat. Easy to use, looks slick, and easy to upload stuff onto it. Small caveat, the battery life might be a little short but, overall it's fine.
Long term use stinks September 20, 2008 R. Wells-Albers (Portland, Oregon United States) I have had my 60 GB for almost 18 months with very few problems. Recently however the unit just stopped working for no reason. I tried to reformat the device with no success. Toshiba's website says to use the directions as outlined in the owners manual (which there are no directions for fixing the device). I then called customer service and they said that it would be $165 to repair the device regardless if it was a major fix or not. The unit has been very well cared for and is only 18 months old!!! I WILL NOT get another Toshiba product as my experience, and from I can see the Toshiba customer service experience for others, has been really poor.
I love it! September 15, 2008 Sunil Gopinath (Minneapolis) I always hated ipods for the simple reason that its Apple proprietary. You have to have itunes and that encodes the mp3s and you can't transfer it to another pc or reuse the encoded mp3s on other players and you can't replace the battery by yourself etc etc... the list is endless. I looked for options which are more user friendly. I needed something that I can dump all my videos/mp3 and just play, not having to worry about itunes or some "must have" software. This device fits the bill. I use it as a backup hard disk and also as a player. It shows up as a usb drive and you can literally drag and drop file and it'll work. Its sleek and light for a 60gb player and has FM/AM and you can also tune to international frequency channels. I have owned it for couple of years and love it. I do admit the ipod is more popular and has a "feel good" touch to it but practicality is all that matters to me.
No need for any other MP3 player! May 6, 2008 Jason M. Strother I purchased this wonderful little device on February 10th of 2007. It is now May 5th of 2008 and so far I have not had a SINGLE problem. My Gigabeat currently houses 5500 songs 48 movies and 3300 photos. I use Amazon Unbox so a good majority of those movies are TV shows but I have never once had trouble transferring songs or movies to the device. I have owned 13 other MP3 players ranging from a Zen Nano to Ipods and this one I have found to be the best.
